Symbols of Remembrance
Saddened by the death of a fellow officer and exhausted from the endless stream of wounded soldiers he was tending, doctor-soldier-poet John McCrae took a few minutes to reflect and write the poem “In Flanders Fields.” In just 15 lines, McCrae captured the meaning of the sacrifice and established the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
