U-BOATS ATTACK!
THE BATTLE OF THE ST. LAWRENCE
In 1942, the U-boat war that had been raging in the North Atlantic since 1939 spilled into the Gulf of St. Lawrence and onto the river itself. Submarines dispatched by German Admiral Karl Dönitz seized on new opportunities to attack ill-defended shipping all along the eastern seaboard of North America, including transports sailing down the St. Lawrence and out to coastal ports. For the first time since the War of 1812, lives were lost to hostile action on Canadian inshore waters.
