The Avro Lancaster was a stalwart of the air campaign over Europe during the Second World War. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, it was crewed by seven airmen—a pilot, engineer, navigator, bomb aimer and three gunners—and flew predominantly night missions for Bomber Command. Hundreds of the 7,377 produced were built by Victory Aircraft in Malton, Ont. More than half were lost.
