The Douglas C-47 Skytrain, or Dakota, was developed from the civilian DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during the Second World War, delivering paratroopers to drop zones, towing glider-borne troops into Arnhem and the Rhine crossing at Wesel, evacuating casualties, and supporting British forces fighting the Japanese in Burma.
