Polar bears are the largest land carnivore—a male polar bear can grow up to 2.8 m long and 800 kg in weight. Polar bears are excellent swimmers with huge paws that are covered by small bumps called papillae which help to grip the ice. The body of a polar bear is ideally suited to the seasonal shifts in the Arctic. Their fur covers a thick layer of fat, their ears and tails are small to limit heat loss, and their paws allow them to tread on thin ice. A polar bear’s skin is black and its fur is transparent with a hollow core that reflects and refracts light from the sun and off the snow. More than two thirds of the total polar bear population is found in Canada—approx. 16,000.
