Formed as the 99th Pursuit Squadron, USAAF, in 1941, the all-Black Tuskegee Airmen trained at Alabama’s Tuskegee Army Air Field. They became known to many a grateful bomber crewman as the Redtails for their red-trimmed aircraft, which included the P-40 Warhawk and, later, the legendary P-51 Mustang, as well as bombers. Nearly 1,000 Redtail pilots flew 1,578 missions and 15,533 sorties, destroyed 261 enemy aircraft, and earned more than 850 medals.
