There were faster fighters, fighters with longer ranges, and fighters with more firepower. But there was no more beautiful nor revered WW II fighter than the Supermarine Spitfire. Along with the Hawker Hurricane, it forged its reputation in the Battle of Britain. The Spit came in more than 20 variants between 1936 and 1948. The last of them were retired by the Irish Air Corps in 1961.
