Almost 80 years ago, my grandmother planted more than a dozen peonies along her Nova Scotian porch. All but one were big and blousy, with layers and layers of pink petals every spring. The oddball in the garden had only one layer of petals. It was my favorite. When my grandmother died at 100 years old, my mother dug up the tuber and sent it to me in Ontario. Now, almost 30 years later, it blooms every spring in my garden. It is the perfect peony pink. The deep green leaves remind me of Emily Carr’s magnificent paintings of coastal forests and the luscious pink is as bright and happy as my memories of my grandmother.
