The North American P-51 Mustang changed the course of the air war in Europe when it entered service in late 1943 and became the first fighter able to escort bombing raids deep into Nazi territory. The RCAF and others used the Merlin-powered aircraft as fighter-bombers, helping ensure Allied air superiority in 1944.
